Eurovision 2025 winner's press conference with JJ
JJ won for Austria at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland
After winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 for Austria with ‘Wasted Love,' JJ headed into the press conference to talk about his win.
Copenhagen 2014 was the last time Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest, and it’s hard to imagine a more iconic voice than Conchita Wurst’s, singing the legendary performance of Rise Like A Phoenix . But 11 years on, the trophy belongs to another iconic voice from Austria, 24-year-old Vienna State Opera countertenor Johannes Pietsch, known as JJ.
At the press conference after his winning performance, JJ couldn’t wait to answer questions from journalists and fan media.
When asked how it felt to win, JJ said: “It is absolutely insane, my dreams came true. It’s out of this world.”
JJ won the jury vote with 258 points, and with an added 178 points from the televote, he took the overall win with 436. Coming in second place with 357 were Israel, and Estonia came in third with 356.
What made him happiest about the win was “that love wins. In my song I was talking about how love is wasted, but love wins. Spread love, forget hate, love is the strongest force.”
When asked what’s next for JJ’s new pop career, he confirmed that he has songwriting weeks planned, as well as an EP. In the immediate future, he probably needs to cancel his week off, but he does have tickets to see FKA twigs in Prague next weekend.
When asked what it means to be the third winner for Austria, after Udo Jürgens triumphed in 1966 and Conchita Wurst took the trophy in 2014, JJ said: "We say in Austria that all good things come in threes – I’m so honoured to be up there with these two. And also to be the first half-Filipino to win.”
He told the press conference that he'd like to be a presenter at Eurovision next year with Conchita, and maybe they could also both be the interval act. He’d also love the host city to be Vienna, because his boyfriend lives just around the corner from the Stadthalle, so he has somewhere convenient to stay.
Austrian broadcaster ORF has a busy year ahead, so we’ll just have to wait for their plans to take shape. But what we do know is that the Eurovision Song Contest is returning to Austria for the 70th contest in 2026 - a platinum jubilee that’s already lining up to be something truly special.
