The band from Portugal: NAPA are making themselves at home
NAPA will be representing Portugal at Basel 2025
From Madeira to Switzerland, NAPA are ready to settle into the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. They’ll be representing their country with the song ‘Deslocado’.
The journey begins
There was tough competition in 2025’s Festival da Canção, where Portugal choose their Eurovision artist. The indie band NAPA gave their all to earn their spot, and were up against 11 other finalists.
The 5-piece band took to the stage and gave a heartfelt performance of their song Deslocado, which means “displaced.” The artists are from the archipelago of Madeira, which is over 800 km from mainland Portugal, and geographically closer to the coast of Africa. The lyrics are all about feeling far away from home, and their love for Madeira.
Once all the competitors had performed and Portugal’s 2024 artist iolanda had returned to the stage to sing again, it was time for the decision. When the public and jury votes came in, NAPA were crowned as Portugal’s winners. The celebrations in Madeira were no doubt off the charts.
The voices of Madeira
NAPA started from a basement in Madeira in 2013. There are 5 talented musicians behind the band, and they are Guilherme Gomes, Lourenço Gomes, Francisco Sousa, Diogo Góis and João Rodrigues, with Guilherme being the lead vocalist and guitarist. He took the lead in writing their Eurovision song Deslocado, and has been writing music for other artists too.
Since starting out, the band have had some very memorable experiences. One stand out moment was performing at the famous live music venue Musicbox in Lisbon. Another was at their first big show, where they had giant cardboard versions of their heads on stage.
The band blend indie rock with worldwide influences, inspired by artists like Arctic Monkeys and Caetano Veloso. Their song Deslocado draws on the Portuguese feeling of saudade, or longing, and their experience of leaving their home for better opportunities. The song was hugely popular before it even made it to the Portuguese national finals, and racked up millions of streams.
As if competing in the Eurovision Song Contest wasn’t enough to be working on, the band are also set to release their third album in 2025.
Eurovision is where the heart is
Most of the band recall really taking notice of the Eurovision Song Contest when Salvador Sobral won for Portugal in 2017 with the ballad Amar Pelos Dois, which shows the impact it can have when a nation wins.
Guilherme has earlier memories of the show though, and remembers Vânia Fernandes singing Senhora Do Mar (Negras Águas) for Portugal in 2008, and finishing in 13th place at the Grand Final.
Almost all the band say that Salvador is their Eurovision hero, and Diogo adds: “Not just because he’s Portuguese, but because of his music and simplicity. His performance was pure emotion, and he proved that a song doesn’t need big productions to leave a lasting impact.”
João however, has a different Eurovision idol. He's picked Daði Freyr, “because he made one of the most banger songs ever.” Daði entered Eurovision twice for Iceland, first in the cancelled 2020 Contest (due to the small matter of a global pandemic) with Think About Things . He entered again in 2021 with 10 Years and came in 4th place.
Music from home and abroad
The band love Portuguese music, as well as English-language songs, usually with a vintage vibe. Francisco loves retro music like Capitão Fausto’s Na Na Nada and Blondie’s Heart of Glass, while João is a fan of classic Fado singer Max’s A Rosinha dos Limões and Bloc Party’s indie rock track Banquet.
Diogo has some indie favourites, including Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Californication, and Lourenço loves the Brazilian singer Evinha’s Esperar Pra Ver. Lead vocalist Guilherme rates Radiohead’s Weird Fishes and the more contemporary MALAMENTE by ROSALÍA.
If you want to hear NAPA’s lead singer at karaoke, you might be treated to ABBA’s Dancing Queen, which is very fitting for Eurovision superstars in the making. He can also be persuaded onto the dance floor with Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! You and us both, Guilherme.
Getting comfortable in Basel
The NAPA musicians all imagine Switzerland to be full of mountains, skiing, and chocolate, and they’re certainly hoping to take in the views and immerse themselves in Swiss culture.
But most of all, they can’t wait to meet the other artists, perform on the biggest stage of their lives, and experience Eurovision with their closest friends.
