Sissal can see clearly, and she’s embracing the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 fantasy. She’s heading to Basel to represent Denmark and will be singing a banger of a dance track, ‘Hallucination'.

The party in Denmark

It’s no dream, Sissal is heading to Basel. But before she got her ticket, she had to earn her spot at Eurovision.

She took to Melodi Grand Prix , Denmark’s national selection final, alongside 7 other acts. During the show, viewers also got to watch Denmark’s 2024 artist SABA perform with a children’s choir; a new version of her beautiful song Sand.

Sissal took to the stage in a dark green, sparkly leotard and a healthy serving of wind machine, and smashed out her EDM banger Hallucination. And she certainly got the attention of the viewers at home.

Once all the songs have been performed, three were voted through to a super-final, with Sissal being one of them. Once they’d performed again, Sissal came out victorious. Basel, get ready for the Sissal party.

Sissal

More than meets the eye

Sissal is originally from the Faroe Islands and moved to mainland Denmark when she was 25. She had to wave goodbye to her lovely Pomeranian dog, who stayed behind with her parents, and who will no doubt be cheering her on at Eurovision.

Aside from Hallucination, Sissal has released other songs full of dance beats and powerful vocals. Some of those are Far From Sober, Deep End, and Hear Me Now.

Along the way, she’s set out to show that women can have thriving pop careers after becoming mothers – overcoming a prejudice that she doesn’t feel men have to face.

She loves the world of Eurovision and the Danish Melodi Grand Prix , where she embraces big parties, the queer community, and artists daring to be themselves. Some of Sissal’s most memorable moments as a musician have been performing at Pride in the Faroe Islands.

She says: “It is truly a day where diversity is celebrated, and people stand by who they are. I have many queer friends, and it means a lot to me to be able to support them and their rights.”

She’s got big Eurovision dreams, but there are a few other bucket list items she’d like to tick off: performing at big festivals and hearing the audience singing along, performing in front of royalty, and she'd also love to voice a character in a Disney film.

She reckons that if she was any Disney character, it would be Ursula from The Little Mermaid. She even told the Official Eurovision Song Contest Podcast host Steve Holden that she might record a cover of Poor Unfortunate Souls. We are ready.

Sissal has often been complimented on her hair extensions. But she does have a horror story related to her incredible mane. When she was rock climbing, her hair got caught in a carabiner, and she was stuck for 20 minutes in the dark and cold.

Reluctantly, she realised she was going to have to unclip her hair, and say goodbye to a big chunk of those gorgeous locks. She ended up having to wade back through deep water.

Making Hallucination a reality

Hallucination first came together at a songwriting camp. Sissal had gone along with an idea for a ballad to create for someone else, but when this song came into being, she knew it had to be hers.

It’s written by a team of top songwriting talent, who have a huge portfolio of Eurovision songs between them. As well as Sissal, the writers include Chris Chordz, Line Spangsberg, Linnea Deb, Malthe Johansen, Marcus Winther-John, and Melanie Wehbe.

Melanie co-wrote SABA’s Sand for Denmark in 2024 , as well as Leonora’s Love Is Forever, which came in 12th for Denmark in 2019, and is an artist in her own right. Linnea co-wrote Måns Zelmerlöw’s Heroes, which won for Sweden in 2015, and Marcus & Martinus’s Unforgettable , which represented Sweden in 2024. And Marcus co-wrote Cyprus’ song Break A Broken Heart for Andrew Lambrou in 2023.

Sissal says: "When we wrote the song, we could feel that we had created something truly special."

The Eurovision fantasy

Sissal’s earliest Eurovision memory comes from when she was 5 years old, and the Olsen Brothers won for Denmark with Fly On The Wings Of Love.

She says: “I was very little, but I remember that my parents were so happy. We have always watched the Grand Prix in my family. They were underdogs and didn’t expect to win, but then they went all the way.”

She’ll be happy to hear that one of the brothers, Jørgen Olsen, will be performing during one of the live shows in Basel, celebrating 25 years since Fly On The Wings Of Love took home the trophy.

As for Eurovision heroes, she has two. First up, it’s Queen Loreen, who has won the Contest twice for Sweden. Secondly, she loves Ruslana who won for Ukraine with Wild Dances. Alongside being a pop sensation, Sissal is also a spinning instructor, and Wild Dances is one of her favourite tracks to play during a sprint. She says the song is full of so much energy, and is the essence of Eurovision.

Turning up the volume

Sissal is hugely inspired by Robyn, which clearly comes through in her music. And it’s not just about club bangers. She also loves Chappell Roan’s Good Luck, Babe!, Womack & Womack’s Teardrops, and Nån annan nu by Molly Sandén.

When she gets on the karaoke, she adores singing Keyshia Cole’s Love, and remembers singing it when she was only 8 years old after seeing it as a karaoke track on YouTube.

Dreaming of Basel

Sissal says she’s throwing out the staging from Melodi Grand Prix and coming at Eurovision with something more elevated. We can’t wait to see what she’s got in mind.

She’s excited to meet the other artists, and has even taken charge of setting up their WhatsApp group chat. She knows she’s about to experience something that very few people will get the chance to experience. And no Sissal, it’s not a Hallucination.
