France's true love: It’s Louane they call ‘maman'
Louane will be representing France at Basel 2025
Louane is bringing the mother of all ballads to the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, flying the flag for France with her song ‘maman’.
Tackling the song reveal
Louane made quite the grand entrance in her Eurovision journey. She didn’t simply announce the song. She didn’t just release it online. She stood on a platform hovering above the pitch during the final game of the Six Nations, where France were playing Scotland. There were up to 80,000 people watching on during half time in the Stade de France, just north of Paris. That included plenty of Eurovision fans who never thought they’d find themselves at a rugby match, and who were, quite frankly, confused. C’est la vie!
The performance began with a marching band of drummers and 10 violinists, before Louane was revealed and gave us maman. It was the final song to be revealed for Eurovision 2025, and Louane certainly revealed it in style.
Behind the chanteuse
Louane is known all across France and beyond, and has become an icon of the French music scene. She’s sold over three million albums worldwide, racked up 1.2 million Instagram followers, and has close to three million monthly listeners on Spotify. But big numbers aside, she’s known for bridging the personal and the universal.
Her Eurovision song maman might be the perfect example. It’s a touching tribute to her late mother, and shows the link between generations of mums. At the end, you hear Louane’s own daughter. It’s her personal story, but many people across the world will relate to the story.
Louane first stepped into the limelight when she was 16, stunning the whole of France when she competed in The Voice. Since then, she’s released several albums, starting with Chambre 12 and most recently solo, and she’s sold out tours across Europe’s largest venues.
Louane has had a lot of incredible moments as a musician. The most memorable was her very first show, when she performed at La Sirène in La Rochelle. Not to be outdone by her performance at a bowling alley at the age of 14.
She’s not only a talented musician, but also an award-winning actress. She won the César Award for most promising actress in the comedy-drama La Famille Bélier.
Enchanté Louane
Beyond her human family, she also has an animal family who will be cheering her on in the Contest. That’s three cats called Abou, Nuage, and Kiko, and a turtle named Zoé. And they’ve all been witness to Louane’s most disgusting habit – dipping Nutella sandwiches in cola. You heard it here first.
We asked Louane who would play her in the movie of her life, and she has obviously been thinking hard about this for a long time. She said Sadie Sink, made famous by her character Max in Stranger Things , and who does look scarily like Louane. Does Louane listen to as much Kate Bush as Max? We hope so.
The Eurovision family
Louane’s Eurovision hero is Céline Dion, who won the Contest for Switzerland in 1988 with Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi in a tense final vote count. She says Céline is her hero, simply “because it’s Céline Dion!” Where better place for Louane to make her Eurovision debut than Switzerland?
There’s another group of Eurovision legends on Louane’s radar too. Her go-to karaoke track is ABBA’s Dancing Queen, the band’s most popular song and a number one all over the world.
If you want to get Louane on the dancefloor, she prefers something a little more contemporary. She can’t help busting a move to Charli xcx’s 360, and now that she’s a Eurovision star, she’ll be living her best BRAT summer in 2025.
Bon voyage!
Very appropriately for someone hailing from the land of fromage, Louane is really looking forward to the cheese in Switzerland. Her current favourite is brie, but perhaps that will change after her trip to Basel.
In Switzerland in May, she would love to win Eurovision for her mum.
