Croatia’s recipe for success: Marko Bošnjak is served
Marko Bošnjak
Cake is best served poisoned, if you’re Marko Bošnjak. He’ll be heading to Basel to represent Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, dishing up the song ‘Poison Cake’. Europe, get your antidotes on standby.
Croatia in the kitchen
At Eurovision 2024, Croatia’s Baby Lasagna (also called Marko) cooked up a sizzling song that landed in second place. Now Marko Bošnjak is on the path to sweet revenge for the Markos. And he's made something he thinks Europe will like.
The newest Marko, Marko Bošnjak, got his place at Eurovision 2025 after he beat the competition at Croatia’s national final selection, Dora. The final of the show was a rollercoaster ride – a 1980s-inspired alien pop song ZNAK from NIPPLEPEOPLE, a clown invasion from Matt Shaft with Welcome to the Circus, and video game ironing in NPC from Laurakojapjeva.
Once the votes had all come in, Marko’s Poison Cake was the star bake of the night. He got the Dora win, and his place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.
A sprinkle of Marko Bošnjak
Marko is only 21 years old, but he’s already getting a reputation as one of the most iconic voices in Croatia. He said that a huge moment for him was hearing an audience sing his lyrics, and described it as something he’ll never forget. Winning Eurovision would no doubt be the icing on the Poison Cake .
This young artist loves exploring different genres and breaking stereotypes, which he’s certainly done with his Eurovision entry.
If he could describe himself with one emoji, it would be a spiral, because he’s always spinning music, spinning ideas, and thinking about what’s coming next. And if he eats any of that Poison Cake, his head will be spinning too.
Tasty, tasty, yum, yum, tasty
It’s not all about sweet treats for Marko. He told us that his favourite cheeses are Feta and Paški, from Pag Island in Croatia. He also loves Parmesan all over his pasta. Just be careful about eating anything that he offers you.
He’s already worked out who would play him in the movie of his life, and it’s Timothée Chalamet. Now we’ve seen it, we can’t unsee it. If Marko accidentally eats any of his home bakes before the Contest, perhaps Timothée (or one of his many look-alikes) will step in. Surely it’s not too big a leap to go from chocolate factory to deadly pastry kitchen…
Stirrings of Eurovision
Marko’s earliest memory of Eurovision is seeing Bosnia & Herzegovina’s performance of Pokušaj, performed by Laka, which featured knitting brides and a washing line. You’re welcome.
Like so many Eurovision fans, Marko’s hero is Verka Serduchka, with the iconic Dancing Lasha Tumbai. The song was a huge hit and came in second place for Ukraine in 2007 – a feeling that Croatia knows well after Rim Tim Tagi Dim lost out to the equally iconic The Code by Nemo in 2024.
Musical taste
Marko’s playlist goes from all out pop hits to alternative vibes. Some of those tunes include Nelly Furtado’s I’m Like A Bird, Charli xcx’s Vroom Vroom, and Lana Del Rey’s Brooklyn Baby. He’s also a big fan of Britney Spears’ Gimme More and Toxic, the latter of which might pair nicely with a slice of Poison Cake.
Get him in the karaoke bar, and Marko will be straight up there singing Amy Winehouse’s You Know I’m No Good. And the song that he can’t resist on the dancefloor is the Eurovision hit from 1987 that came in 4th place for former Yugoslavia, Ja Sam Za Ples by Novi Fosili. It had all the right Eurovision ingredients: Keytars, 1980s hairstyles, and a boppy little swing dance.
Whisked off to Switzerland
Marko associates Switzerland with cheese, banks, and trains that are never late. Good news for the Eurovision catering, budget, and schedule.
With the Contest just around the corner, he can’t wait to represent Croatia and bake his performance to perfection. Let them eat Poison Cake!
