About Melodi Grand Prix

On Saturday 1 March, Denmark is going to select its song for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest. Melodi Grand Prix returns as the country's national final, with 8 songs in the running to claim that sought-after ticket to Basel.

We're all invited to tune in as Stéphanie Surrugue and Sara Bro host the big event live from the Jyske Bank Boxen arena in Herning. And as well as the 8 competing entries that we get to watch, Danish broadcaster DR has also curated an unmissable lineup of Eurovision-adjacent guest performances too.

We have a Swiss connection!

The last time that 2025 hosts Switzerland delivered us a Eurovision Song Contest was in 1989, when the city of Lausanne brought us our annual dose of top-tier tunes from all across the continent. There, Denmark did pretty well - with Vi Maler Byen Rød giving the Nordic nation a third-place finish after a colourful performance by Birthe Kjær.

Well, the Danish pop icon will be returning to the Melodi Grand Prix stage on Saturday night to show Denmark's Basel hopefuls precisely how it's done.

On top of that, we'll also have Melodi Grand Prix 2024 winner SABA returning to the Danish national final, after representing her country in Malmö with the song SAND .

As for the 8 artists competing to be SABA's successor, that victory will be decided across two rounds of voting, as has been tradition at Denmark's Melodi Grand Prix in recent years.

In the first round of voting, a combination of a jury vote and a public vote will determine three songs to advance to the 'superfinal'. In this 'superfinal', those three songs will be put to a vote once more, and both the public and a jury will decide on the song that will become Denmark's entry to the 69th Eurovision Song Contest.

MARIYA - I Belong To Me

Singer, songwriter and dancer MARIYA is making her debut in Denmark's Melodi Grand Prix this year with the song I Belong To Me .

After having worked as a professional choreographer over the past few years, MARIYA finally stepped out into the limelight herself in 2024, when she participated in last year's edition of X Factor Denmark .

Tim Schou - Proud

Eurovision fans should recognise Tim. The Danish artist was the singer of the band A Friend In London, who represented Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011; giving his country a Top 5 finish in the Grand Final with New Tomorrow .

After the band broke up in 2015, Tim sold everything and travelled the world, before returning to Denmark to reinvent himself as a solo musician. His Melodi Grand Prix song is about taking pride in everything you are and everything you have been through; daring to accept your scars and everything that makes you who you have become.

Max Ulver - Supernova

A relatively late starter in music, Max Ulver learned to play the piano at the age of 25, as well as learning to sing and produce beats. He moved to London to go to music school and work in the film industry, before returning to Denmark to launch his career as a musician.

Max had his big breakthrough as a songwriter in 2020, when he went Number 1 in China with the song Lover , by the Chinese superstar KUN. The song has now been streamed over a billion times and he's since had several more big hits as a songwriter in Asia, as well as writing and producing for Danish stars such as Christopher and Barbara Moleko.

Hervé Toure - ALLEZ ALLEZ

Despite its French title, ALLEZ ALLEZ is actually the only song in this year's Melodi Grand Prix lineup to be performed in Danish!

A multi-talented man, Hervé has previously been a professional footballer in the French third division, as well as treading the boards of the Royal Danish Theatre in Arven , which in 2023 won a Reumert Award. Now, Hervé is excited to be stepping out onto the Melodi Grand Prix stage; an institution he has loved since he was a child.

Maria Mathea - Air

Although this is the first time that Maria herself takes the stage as an artist, she has previously written songs for not only Denmark's Melodi Grand Prix , but also the Eurovision Song Contest! In 2023, Blanka took her composition Solo to the Grand Final for Poland in Liverpool.

Maria's biggest dream has always been to be in the spotlight as an artist, but she has until now worked a lot behind the scenes. She has worked as an A&R, backing vocalist and songwriter, with big names such as Hardwell, Lost Kings, Elliot, Ummet Ozcan, KAAZE, Theoz, YooA, Hooverphonic and many others. Overall, Maria's music has generated over 240 million streams to date.

Adel the Second - The Unluckiest Boy Alive

Adel the Second wrote his first song when he was 10 and that experience only made his musical ambitions grow, resulting in him deciding to become a singer at the age of 13.

The Unluckiest Boy Alive serves as Adel the Second's debut single. He has written it himself, with production by Søren Christensen from the rock band The Blue Van. The track was inspired by pop and house music, with orchestral elements.

Sissal - Hallucination

Sissal lives in Copenhagen but is originally from Thorshavn in the Faroe Islands, where she performed for the first time on stage at the age of 10. Since moving to Denmark, she's played at festivals, voiced a role in the Danish dub of a Disney film, and even performed for the King of Denmark!

The artist is inspired by Nordic electropop from the likes of Dagny and Robyn, and is also a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest, describing it as a world that she feels right at home in.

Andreas Kruse - Hear My Prayer

Back in 2018, Andreas became famous when he won The X-Factor Denmark as part of the group Place On Earth. In 2022, he released his debut single as a solo artist, and now Andreas is ready to pursue the next chapter of his musical dream - Melodi Grand Prix .

Andreas suggests that his song Hear My Prayer can be interpreted as a unifying and common echo of all the individual problems that every human carries around. Andreas hopes that listeners can use the song at a point when they need the energy he's put into it.

The winner of Melodi Grand Prix 2024 was the song SAND , performed by SABA.

In Malmö, Denmark competed in the Second Semi-Final, earning 36 points and finishing in 12th place.
