Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga to become a musical
Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams starred in the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
A new musical based on the Netflix film 'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga' is in development.
It's time to return to "where the whales can live 'cos they're gentle people"!
Fire Saga is heading to the stage. Its story, its songs and its beloved characters are going to be turned into a musical, with development on the show already started.
The musical adaptation will be written by Will Ferrell and Harper Steele (who were behind the writing of the film, which also starred Ferrell in the lead role), alongside Anthony King.
Alex Timbers will be directing the musical, and we have another name making the jump from the Netflix film to this new production; Savan Kotecha - hitmaker for Ariana Grande, One Direction and The Weeknd - will be overseeing the music.
The film was originally released in the summer of 2020, heading straight into the Top 10 most watched films on the streaming platform in the United States, and hitting number 1 in other territories across the globe.
The Story of Fire Saga starred Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdóttir; two aspiring Icelandic musicians who are given the chance to represent their country at the world’s most famous song competition.
The soundtrack went on to be nominated for a Grammy Award and one of the songs from the film was nominated for Best Original Song at the 93rd Academy Awards.
Husavik (My Hometown) was written by Savan Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus and Rickard Göransson, and a live performance by the song's vocalist Molly Sandén was broadcast as part of the Oscars ceremony via satellite from the Icelandic town of Húsavík.
Some quotes from the film have even embedded themselves into the pop-culture lexicon - try attending a Eurovision party without hearing the words "PLAY JAJA DING DONG" chanted at least once, for example.
And of course the movie event was the catalyst for the Jaja Ding Dong Bar & Eurovision Exhibition; a mini 'Eurovision museum' that has opened up in Húsavík, Iceland.
Hollywood icon and writer of the musical, Will Ferrell, is enthusiastic about penning a new chapter in Fire Saga 's story:
"We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.”
Director of the show Alex Timbers adds:
"Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes. And when I first saw their joyful Eurovision movie during the pandemic, it buoyed spirits during a very dark time. With this stage adaptation, I can’t wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence and awe to audiences across the world.”
Martin Green CBE, Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, shares the excitement of everyone involved in developing the musical:
“This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaptation of a film the world loved. Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally – especially as we approach our 70th edition in 2026.”
